China Accuses United States of ‘Hypocritical Policies’ Over Trade Levy Warning

The former US president’s most recent warning to introduce an additional 100% tariff on products from China has been described as a “classic case” of American hypocrisy, per the China’s leadership.

A representative of the ministry further commented that the nation could enact its own unspecified “countermeasures” if the American leader follows through on his pledge, emphasizing that the country was “fearless” of a looming commercial battle.

On Friday, Trump responded at China’s decision to reinforce its policies for exports of rare earths, alleging the Chinese leadership of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the global community “captive”.

Additionally, he warned to pull out of a planned summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, which was arranged for a summit in South Korea later this month.

Trump’s comments on that day unsettled global markets, with the S&P 500 share index closing down nearly three percent, marking its biggest drop since earlier this year.

His comments renewed concerns of a commercial dispute between the two economic giants.

This past spring, the both nations had reached an agreement to remove high import duties on each other’s imports, which had led to concerns of bilateral trade stopping between the two nations.

Consequently, United States levies on Chinese imports subject to an added 30% levy compared with the start of the year, while American products entering China incur a 10% tariff.

China’s latest remarks – released by the Ministry of Commerce in the format of written responses to media inquiries – reflected rhetoric from the zenith of the latest commercial tensions.

They criticised US export restrictions on semiconductors and chips while justifying the country’s own overseas sale regulations on key elements as “routine measures” to ensure national security and that of the global community.

Their representative said that for “an extended period”, the US had “expanded the interpretation” of domestic safety, misused export control measures and “adopted biased policies against the Chinese nation.

“Turning to” trade levy ultimatums is not the correct approach to interact with Beijing,” the spokesperson stated.

“Beijing’s stance” on a trade conflict has always been unchanging: we wish to avoid one, but we are unafraid of one.”

Recently, Beijing declared it was reinforcing overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals and additional substances critical for cutting-edge industry.

This move was regarded as a key move, as the nation processes about ninety percent of the global rare earth supply, which are used in products such as solar panels and handheld devices.

Latest statements from the US and China are being interpreted by analysts as a means of bolstering negotiating stances prior to future trade talks.

It is unclear whether a meeting between Trump and President Xi, planned at a high-level meeting in the Republic of Korea later this month, will still proceed.
