Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Ben Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered those words in multiple interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series defeat.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, extending his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
