Amanda Nguyen, a bioastronautics research scientist, was a passenger on the automated spacecraft in April 2025.

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also featured well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who challenged its value and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, describing a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the journey.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is best known for her pioneering work protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Months following achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she acknowledged the followers whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

The Historic Journey

The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of outer space.

The diverse crew also comprised experts in various fields.

The venture behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
