It has been 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story film debuted, launching Pixar as a leading animation studio and bringing viewers to iconic characters like Woody (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now famous worldwide.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, offering a glimpse into the storyline but keeping fans wondering how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Frightens the Toys

The preview reveals Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he grew up — receiving a brand new toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her first tablet computer, and she is thrilled about it.

Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the toys seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it probably is.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

One thing the teaser doesn't touch on is what Woody is back with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), traveling with a carnival and assisting giveaway items find good homes.

Certainly, Pixar will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is a little strange, however. It also makes us wonder whether his partner will have returned with him. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Last Installment

At the very least, some aspects are carrying over from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was hand over his symbol of authority to Jessie (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of Bonnie's bedroom. In the teaser shows the badge attached to her outfit.

Hopefully she is remains the key figure among the toys.

Toy Story 5 debuts on June 19, 2026.
