This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your significant other and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it might appear like standard biological terror, but within Together resides a deep meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for over ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the two stars infuse a particular energy to their characters, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for professional reasons. A commonly used story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending elements of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his failing musical ambitions inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making one partner or the other the clear bad guy.

The couple face the sort of issues that come with long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, certain partners having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
